ALAN MUNDE CLASSIC

ALAN MUNDE is one of
the most highly respected banjo players in the world. A master of both
melodic and Scruggs styles, Alan has played and taught music
professionally for over 40 years. He is a member of the American Banjo
Hall of Fame, inducted in 2022 and honored for his years of teaching
Scruggs and Keith-style methods at banjo camps around the country and
a winner of the 2021 Steve Martin Banjo Prize.
During the heyday of the folk music boom of the early 1960s, Alan was
attracted to the banjo and, in turn, bluegrass music. It wasn't long
before he bought his first banjo and began searching for area
bluegrass banjo players such as Eddie Shelton who became an important
mentor and friend.
While attending the University of Oklahoma,
Alan played with fellow student and future world-class fiddler Byron
Berline at functions and fiddle contests. In 1969, he met Wayne
Stewart and Sam Bush and began his long career by recording the
seminal album Poor Richard's Almanac. After a stint
with Jimmy Martin, Alan reconnected with Byron and formed the
contemporary bluegrass band the Country Gazette. In
addition, he recorded many of his own albums including the
ground-breaking debut album, Banjo Sandwich.
Join Steve during one of the shows on the days and times listed above
week of June 15th
by clicking on the station links AT THE APPROPRIATE TIME as he
features music from Alan's album, Excelsior, shown
above. It contains 15 tracks, 13 written by Alan honoring his lifelong
friendships with many of the legendary mandolin and guitar players of
the past. He talks with Steve about those friendships with the likes
of Roland and Clarence White, Sam Bush, 'Slim' Richey, Byron Berline,
Keith Whitley and more. All influenced the creation of this album. Did
Alan ever play the accordion? Listen to this fascinating interview
with a true musical legend and find out.
